GST registration gives your business a GSTIN — a 15-digit identity number that lets you legally collect GST, claim input tax credit, and sell to other businesses who need your tax invoice. Registration is free and done entirely online.
Who needs to register for GST?
You must register if any of these apply:
- Your aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh in some special-category states)
- Your turnover crosses ₹20 lakh for services (₹10 lakh in some states)
- You make inter-state supplies of goods
- You sell through an e-commerce platform
- You are a casual or non-resident taxable person
Many small businesses also register voluntarily before crossing the limit, because B2B customers prefer suppliers who can give them a proper tax invoice.
Tip: if you sell to other businesses or across state lines, register early. Without a GSTIN, your B2B customers cannot claim credit on your bills, so you lose sales to registered competitors.
Documents you need
| Category | Documents |

The registration process, step by step
- Go to the GST portal and start a new registration (Form GST REG-01, Part A).
- Enter your PAN, mobile and email; verify with OTP to get a TRN (Temporary Reference Number).
- Log in with the TRN and complete Part B — business details, promoters, place of business, goods/services, and bank account.
- Upload the documents and verify using Aadhaar authentication or DSC.
- You receive an ARN to track the application.
- After verification (typically within about a week), your GSTIN is issued.
After you get your GSTIN
Once registered, you must issue proper GST invoices, charge the correct GST rate, and file returns like GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. This is where a billing app becomes essential — it turns all three obligations into a background task instead of a monthly ordeal.

What is the turnover limit for GST registration?
Registration is generally required when turnover crosses Rs 40 lakh for goods (Rs 20 lakh in some special-category states) or Rs 20 lakh for services (Rs 10 lakh in some states). Certain businesses must register regardless of turnover.
How long does GST registration take?
After submitting the application and completing verification (such as Aadhaar authentication), the GSTIN is usually issued within about a week.
Can I register for GST voluntarily?
Yes. Many small businesses register before crossing the threshold so they can issue tax invoices and let B2B customers claim input tax credit, which makes them more competitive.
